Roger Thomson, former
Board president
“I first got involved through Christ Church, and it wasn’t long
before I felt a strong tie to Canterbury Foundation.” says Roger Thomson,
former Board president. “I’ve been involved with several Boards
over the years, and Canterbury is, by any standards, a truly fantastic organization.
“I think it starts from the leadership and filters down to all the staff.
The focus is on the residents, always asking ‘What can we do for them?’ We
all recognize this place as their home, a place where they want to be able
to invite friends and family and know that everyone will feel welcome and comfortable.
“The Board and staff take pride in being more than custodians. We are
all one big family and creating a home-like environment is extremely important
to everyone. New staff are hired with that in mind as well. It’s about
caring for the people you serve.”
Security is also
taken very seriously.
Residents need
to feel safe,
and their families need to know they are safe. Front desk personnel,
buzzer entry into the Manor and cameras placed in public areas
help. In addition, medications are monitored and taken as prescribed
with the assistance of on-site medical professionals; notice
is taken when someone isn’t eating properly; residents are regularly checked on
at the Court; and Manor residents can participate, if they choose,
in a morning monitoring program.
“Many of these things take place behind the scenes, but they are so important
to the peace of mind of families and the residents themselves,” says
Roger. “It is a true honour to be part of this organization, and I’ll
always continue to support Canterbury.”
